(WPRI) - North Kingstown's Elizabeth Beisel swam the fastest time in the 200-meter backstroke semifinals to make it to tomorrow's finals with a chance to win her second Olympic medal.
She swam the semifinal in a time of 2:06.18. No one swam faster in either semifinal, even fellow American and event favorite Missy Franklin who came in with a time of 2:06.84.
"I haven't had a good 200m back in a while. It's going to be a big confidence boost going into tomorrow night," said Beisel.
Beisel's time is faster than the one she swam at the Olympic trials where she finished second to Franklin. At that meet, however, Franklin finished with a time of 2:06.12.
The finals are Friday at 2:30 p.m. eastern time.
Beisel is already an Olympic silver medalist in the 400-meter individual medley
Other notable finalists in the race are South Africa's Kirsty Coventry, the current world record holder in the event, and Austrailia's Meagen Nay.
