(WPRI) - There were all kinds of fireworks at McCoy on Friday night. Home runs and ejections were the order of the night as the Yankees beat Pawtucket 8-5.
Corban Joseph, Darnell McDonald, Ramiro Pena and Melky Mesa all left the yard as the Yankees scored 8 runs on just 8 hits. The PawSox counntered with a pair of ninth inning homers by J.C. Linares and Jon Hee.
The Mesa homer lead to a wild scene at McCoy. Originally ruled a foul ball by home plate ump Jeff Gosney, Yankees manager Dave Miley protested and the call was eventually overturned as the three man crew met near the mound.
Manager Arnie Beyeler was ejected, followed by Pitching Coach Rich Sauveur. Sauveur flew out of the dugout and was in the face of Gosney. Contact was made with A.J. Johnson.
There will have to be a review to determine who initiated the contact. As the inning ended, Pawtucket pitcher Jose de la Torre lunged at Gosney. Jose de la Torre had to be restrained by first baseman Mauro Gomez.
The loss drops the PawSox (69-59) three games behind the first place Yankees, with 16 games remaining. Pawtucket maintains a one game lead for the wild card spot. The PawSox face Buffalo on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.
