BOSTON (AP/WPRI) -- Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren has unseated incumbent Senator Brown in the race for Massachusetts Senate.
In a hard-fought campaign that garnered national attention, the Harvard Law professor defeated Brown, who was seeking his first full term as Senator. He won a special election two years ago to replace the late Ted Kennedy.
It was the most expensive Senate contest in the nation this year, with the candidates spending a combined $68 million, and one of the most closely watched races.
Warren is a former Obama administration adviser who helped create the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the wake of the mortgage crisis and the meltdown on Wall Street.
She becomes the first woman elected to the Senate from Massachusetts.
