WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) -- Woonsocket police have a new tool at their disposal to get important information directly to residents.
The department will begin using the Nixle Community Information Service, which will allow messages from the police to be delivered directly to residents via a cell phone text message or email.
A department spokesperson says such information could include missing persons reports, parking bans, and other community or safety information. The service allows messages to be targeted geographically, down to a 1/4 mile radius.
Nixle is a subcription service that interested residents can sign up for online at www.nixle.com , and choose which delivery method they prefer for the messages.
