WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) -- A rock blasting company has been cleared to continue working in Westerly, despite several complaints concerning black dust buildup.
Westerly residents have been concerned about black since August 2011, some claiming to have consistently woken up to find thick layers of dust coating their cars and windows. Many believed that Copar Industries - a stone manufacturing company - was the cause of the problem .
After receiving 78 complaints concerning dust buildups, the Dept. of Environmental Management launched several investigations into the effect Copar Industries had on its surrounding neighborhoods. Thursday night, the DEM reported they found "very few" problems at the Copar worksites.
After an official review, it was concluded that the Westerly facility was not in violation.
