CRANSTON, R.I. ( WPRI) – American Idol winner and country music star Scotty McCreery is scheduled to perform at a father/daughter dance Thursday night in Cranston.
Cat Country 98.1 WCTK-FM is hosting the dance at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The sponsored dance comes on the heels of a recent decision to ban all events in Cranston involving fathers and daughters and mothers and sons.
Four months ago the American Civil Liberties Union sent a letter to Cranston School Superintendent Judith Lundsten on behalf of a single mother. The complaint revolved around the woman's daughter being unable to attend a "Me and My Guy Dance" that was scheduled at Stadium Elementary School.
Cat Country said they received dozens of calls and emails from people who were frustrated they could no longer participate in the traditional dances.
The "Sadie Hawkins" dance will be open to girls in grades 1 through 6 who attend any Cranston public elementary school.
Meanwhile, back in September, the school committee overwhelmingly approved a resolution that will uphold the tradition of the events, but will also comply with the law.
Committee members are asking residents to contact their legislators and ask them to change the law before the legislature reconvenes in January.
