PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Providence's Mayor Angel Taveras has signed a revised nuisance property ordinance into law.
The revised ordinance would authorize the police chief to declare a chronic nuisance against properties where crime frequently occurs.
Our news partners at the Providence Journal report that the police chief would be able to force the owner, manager or any person in possession of a designated nuisance property to formally promise to correct the problems.
Failure to comply would lead to orders of nuisance abatement, fines and civil penalties.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) objected to the law, saying it would stigmatize alleged nuisance properties.
