NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) - One New Bedford beach reopened to swimmers Thursday, but another remained partially closed due to the threat of harmful bacteria.
The New Bedford Health Department announced Thursday that the water quality at East Beach along East Rodney French Boulevard is now safe for swimming, but water samples from a section of West Beach on West Rodney French Boulevard showed elevated bacteria levels.
As a result, the part of West Beach known as North 400 and South 400 (map) remained closed Thursday.
Both beaches were closed on Wednesday as a precaution, after heavy rainfall the day before raised the risk of harmful bacteria levels.
The New Bedford Health Department will test the water daily. The beach will fully reopen once the water quality is deemed safe for swimming.
In Rhode Island, two beaches remained closed at of Thursday morning. Third Beach in Middletown was shutdown on Tuesday, and City Park Beach in Warwick was closed to swimmers on Wednesday.
