FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) -- Police have apprehended a wanted man after he led them on a wild pursuit through several Massachusetts communities.
Officers attempted to arrest Cleveland Clay, 25, at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Fall River on an outstanding warrant for domestic charges.
Police converged on his 1998 Lincoln Continental, when he suddenly put the car in reverse, smashed into two cruisers, and took off towards Westport.
Clay crashed and abandoned his car in the area of I-195 and fled on foot. He was later spotted in a vehicle being operated by another man, who police discovered was not aware of any criminal activity. We're told the motorist struck Clay with his truck while he was running along the highway. The suspect's leg was broken in the crash, and the driver agreed to transport him to the hospital.
When troopers stopped and approached the vehicle, the motorist informed them that the suspect had tried to hide a firearm under the dashboard.
Clay was arrested and transported to Rhode Island Hospital by ambulance, and is now under police guard.
We're told the suspect does not have a license to carry a firearm, and that officers also discovered a bag of crack cocaine in the abandoned car.
The incident remains under investigation, and we're told Clay will be booked and charged following treatment.
