CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) -- James Diossa, a youthful city councilman, won a big victory in Central Falls' nonpartisan mayoral primary on Tuesday and will move on to face former Police Chief James Moran in the general election next month.
Diossa won 59% with 2,039 votes, compared with 18% and 627 votes for Moran, according to preliminary results released by the city receiver's office. Former Mayor Thomas Lazieh placed third with 15%, followed by Bruce Corrigan with 4% and Tia Ristaino-Siegel with 3%.
The Central Falls Board of Canvassers still has to count 246 mail ballots and an unknown number of provisional ballots, the receiver's office said.
Diossa and Moran will face off in a Dec. 11 general election to finish the one year remaining in the term of former Mayor Charles Moreau, who resigned in September and has agreed to plea guilty on corruption charges.
