Fire dept: Shovel in front of hydrants

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) -- The West Warwick Fire Department is issuing a reminder to residents of Southern New England to shovel snow in front of any fire hydrants. The few minutes it saves for firefighters could be enough to save people's lives.

Even if snow is blanketing the region, the threat of house fires is always there, and fire officials are urging everyone to take a little extra time to clear a path to your nearest hydrant.

"If a fire hydrant is lost or buried in snow, firefighters can lose valuable time trying to located it when they first arrive at a fire," said Chief Joseph Baris Jr. in a statement. "You can perform a valuable public service and protect yourself, your family and your neighbors by taking the responsibility for shoveling out and clearing any fire hydrants near your home during and after a snowstorm."

If you live near elderly or handicapped residents, Chief Baris asks you to do the right thing and shovel out their hydrants as well.
