(WPRI) -- A local school bus company is doing their part to lend a helping hand to some of the areas hit hardest by Sandy, with the launch of their "Sandy Shuttle."

Ocean State Transit is asking for donations of "desperately needed" items that it will take on Saturday to areas of New York City that are still suffering from the superstorm.

Organizers of the Sandy Shuttle are seeking donations of flashlights, batteries, trash bags, diapers, baby food and ready-mix formula, canned goods, manual can openers, socks, clothing/jackets, blankets, personal hygiene items and over-the-counter medicines.

Donations can be dropped off:

  • 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the bus yards for Chariho, East Greenwich, East Providence, Exeter and South Kingstown schools.
  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at R.I. Harvesting Kubota dealer, 15 Extension 184, Ashaway.
  • Anytime after 4 p.m. at Indigo Pizza, 599 Tiogue Ave., Coventry.
  • At Panera Bread, 49 Long Wharf Mall, Newport and at Prudential R.I. Realty, 137 Franklin St., Westerly, (401) 637-4800. For information, call (401) 884-1552.
