Rescued cats arrive from post-Sandy NJ

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) -- It's been one month since Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast, and Rhode Island is now doing more to help those affected by the storm in one of the hardest-hit areas of New Jersey.

A group of 20 cats from the Garden State are now looking for a permanent home in the Ocean State thanks to the help of one local animal group.

Over and over we see examples of Rhode Islanders going out of their way to help those affected by the storm, and now the Potter League for Animals in Middletown is pitching in.

"It was not without a serious conversation that we said we need to help, and we'll make room," said Christie Smith of the Potter League.

The felines needed a home, and New Jersey animal shelters were completely filled with cats and needed a hand. The Potter League got in touch with them, and decided to take on the cats from Jackson, NJ.

Although, the Potter League was already filled past capacity, so accepting the new additions was no easy task.

"It's definitely a stretch, it was the right thing to do, and that's why you do it," said Smith. "Animals need help."

The group has been looking over all of the cats to make sure they're ready to be adopted. Now, the 20 felines are looking for homes after losing theirs to Hurricane Sandy.

"Certainly nothing better this holiday season than to stick your hand out and help an animal, or people too," added Smith.

Since the shelter is so overloaded with cats right now, they have special adoption deals going on in December to try and find homes for all of them.
