PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The governors of Rhode Island and Massachusetts have declared emergencies in the two states in anticipation of Hurricane Earl.
Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts and Gov. Donald Carcieri of Rhode Island signed separate disaster declarations on Thursday. The hurricane is expected to skirt Nantucket and Cape Cod on Friday night and into early Saturday morning, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.
Southeastern Massachusetts is under a hurricane warning while Rhode Island is under a tropical storm warning.
The declarations free up resources to help each state respond quickly to the storm.
Meanwhile, utility crews are girding up for the storm.
