BOSTON, MA (WPRI) - Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield is retiring following 19 seasons in Major League Baseball.
Wakefield has played 17 of those seasons with the Red Sox.
He debuted with the team in 1995, following two seasons (1992-1993) with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He won his 200th game in September 2011 against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Wakefield ranks behind only Cy Young and Roger Clemens on the red sox all-time wins list with 186.
Wakefield won two world series with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007 and won the Roberto Clemente Award in 2010.
The All-Star pitcher was known for his knuckleball pitch, striking out 2,156 batters in his career.
Wakefield, who is 45 years old, was the oldest active player on the Red Sox roster at the time of his retirement.
