CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Samantha Morrell is out of high school now, but the winning streak she started there has continued.

The thee-time high school golf state champion from North Kingstown became the Colonial League Rookie of the year this spring after a strong freshman season at Old Dominion.

She then returned to Rhode Island this summer to capture the New England Women's Amateur title becoming the first Rhode Islander to win the championship since Anna Grzebien in 2006.

"I was striking the ball better than I ever have all year," Morrell said.

But Morrell really credits her success to a different approach to the game, one that has her enjoying the game more.

"I used to be a hothead out there, a real nut case, very negative," Morrell told Eyewitness Sports.  "Now I've been a lot happier on the golf course, and that has helped me.  I'm really in a good place right now."
