PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Liam Coen was the Gatorade Player of the Year in high school at La Salle Academy, and he followed that up by leading the UMass Minutemen to a national title game in college, but now Coen has traded his helmet for a headset.
As they prepare for the Ivy League season, Brown University has welcomed Coen as their new quarterbacks coach.
"I think we have a special guy in Liam Coen," Brown head coach Phil Estes said. "He's one of the best quarterbacks to ever come out of Rhode Island."
And Coen has some impressive quarterbacks to coach led by Kyle Newhall-Caballero who set records with the Brown offense last season leading the Ivy League in total offense with an average of 281.4 yards per game, passing (270.9 passing yards per game), passing touchdowns (18), and completion percentage.
"[The quarterbacks] were doing a great job before I got here, so I'm just trying to add onto it a little bit if I can," Coen said.
Coen has plenty of experience to draw on as a coach. He grew up watching his father coach high school football.
"I'm taking some of his opinions on things and the way he did things, taking some of the things from my coaches to UMass, and learning a whole heck of a lot from the staff here now," Coen adds. "I'm just trying to help out as much as I can."
