WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A nonprofit community foundation has been created to buy the remaining 80 acres of the former Rocky Point amusement park in Warwick.
The city and state bought about 40 acres of the property for $4.4 million in 2008 to preserve as open space . But numerous proposals by developers to buy the remaining land over the years have fallen through.
The land is in federal receivership and remains under the jurisdiction of the federal Small Business Administration .
During a news conference Tuesday, John Howell, president of the Rocky Point Foundation , said the land is important in preserving the state's coastal beauty. He says he is seeking donation and working with state and local officials on the plan. He figures it will take at least $10 million to $12 million to buy the 80-acre tract.
Rocky Point closed in 1995.
