Go green this holiday season

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- If you're thinking of frying up a turkey for Thanksgiving, the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation is more than happy to take your leftovers.

Fried turkey makes a great feast, but getting rid of the leftover cooking grease can sometimes be a hassle.

"The most important thing to remember is that you should never pour that down the drain," said Krystal Noiseux of the RI Resource Recovery Corporation . "It has to be placed in a water-tight container."

Noiseaux says the container can be dropped of at their facilities in Johnston. This prevents damage to the pipes under your sink, saves space in the landfill, and has one other key benefit for the environment.

"It's also going to make renewable energy, something that's really important, and it's a local company that's doing it," she added.

The local company is Newport Biodiesel, and they convert the oil into diesel engine fuel and home heating oil.

The RIRRC actually accepts oil drop-offs Monday through Saturday all year round, and they're not picky about the type of oil.

"We take waste vegetable oil, corn oil, or olive oil and it's okay if it has a little bit of trace animal fat in it to from the turkey," said Noiseaux.

We're told the RIRRC will be closed on Thanksgiving, so save your oil until Black Friday, when they will be open from 6 a.m. until 3:45 p.m.
