CENTRAL QUEENSLAND, Australia (CNN) - An investigation is under way in Central Queensland, Australia, after a 46-year-old mother drowned in flash flooding on Sunday afternoon.

The woman was swept away from a popular swimming spot at Bouldercomb -- south of Rockhampton -- after 70 millimetres of rain fell in 15 minutes. 23 other people were rescued.

"It was a chaotic situation first up because we had so many people missing, verifying those people, and then we come to the third end, we located those people, but it was just a chaotic situation," said Senior Sergeant John Hamrey with Quneensland Police.

There's also been flash flooding on the gold coast with waterways swamped, cars stranded, and boats ripped from their moorings.

The state emergency service has received more than 270 calls for help over the past 48 hours.

More showers are forecast over coming days.
