AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Big 12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma appear to be staying in the conference.

Shortly after Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott confirmed to The Associated Press in an e-mail that the University of Texas had declined an invitation to join his conference, the Longhorns put out a statement saying they would "continue competing in the Big 12."

University president William Powers Jr. wouldn't give any details about why the school decided to stay put when asked by the AP. Texas has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma also says it's going to stay in the Big 12 Conference.

OU President David Boren and athletic director Joe Castiglione issued a statement Monday night saying the university's decision to stay where it's at and not join the Pacific-10 Conference came after consulting with fellow Big 12 schools.

Boren and Castiglione say the decision "represents a consensus position which resulted from a collaborative effort with our colleagues in the conference."

They say Oklahoma "intends to work very hard to make the conference as lasting and dynamic as possible."

Boren and Castliglione visited with Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott on Saturday, after which OU scheduled a special regents meeting for Wednesday. That meeting now has been canceled.
