NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police have once again searched the site of a former grocery store for evidence in the 1979 disappearance of a 6-year-old boy.
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne confirmed investigators returned Wednesday to where an alleged abductor once worked. He said the search wasn't based on new information, but wouldn't elaborate.
The FBI, which also has investigated the case of Etan Patz, wasn't involved.
Police have said Pedro Hernandez of Maple Shade, N.J., told investigators he lured the boy into the shop with the promise of a soda. He allegedly said he led the child to the basement, choked him and left his body in a bag of trash about a block away.
His attorney has described Hernandez as bipolar and schizophrenic, with a history of hallucinations.
