PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Heavy rains and strong winds made for a tricky evening commute and left thousands of power customers in the dark Monday.

According to Eyewitness News Meteorologist Tony R Petrarca , a high wind warning is in effect for Southeastern Mass until 8 p.m.

Winds of 35 to 45 mph are expected with some gusts over 60 mph are possible.

This has the potentail to bring down tree branches and powerlines.

The weather also caused some power outages in the area. Monday evening, National Grid reported 1,600 customers without power - most of those in Providence and Kent County.

The bad weather was to blame for several flight cancellations into and out of T.F. Green Airport in Providence.

Anyone planning to fly should check on their flight's status before heading to the airport.
