PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI/AP) - Angel Taveras was sworn in Monday as Providence's new mayor, vowing to tackle the city's financial problems and improve its schools.

He officially took the Oath of Office at 12:01 a.m. Monday during a private ceremony at his home with family and friends. He attended an breakfast with religious leaders later Monday morning, and delivered his inaugural address at City Hall in the afternoon.

Taveras, 40, is the city's first Hispanic mayor . His parents immigrated from the Dominican Republic.

In his inaugural speech, parts of which he read in Spanish, Mayor Taveras said he will focus on economic development, reforming city finances, and improving public schools.

"Let me be clear: the time for Providence to take control of its financial future is now," Taveras said.

While he admits he is taking office at a challenging time, Mayor Taveras says he is ready to bring Providence back.

"In the face of all these challenges, and in the midst of this storm, I am confident. Confident that together, we will overcome these challenges, weather this storm and strengthen our city and our state," he said.
