MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - Middletown police are investigating a phone scam targeting the elderly that has recently hit the area.

Police said they have received two complaints where the caller poses as an adult grandchild asking for bail money after being arrested in Canada. According to police, the caller then puts a second person on the phone pretending to be a police officer.

The scam artists request a large sum of money, being charged to the victim's credit card. Police want people to be aware of the latest scam targeting Rhode Islanders.

Authorities are telling people to not disclose personal information to anyone, if you've received an unexpected phone call.

If you have any concerns regarding phone solicitations please call your local police department.
