Fallout continues from drug lab scandal

BOSTON, MASS. (WPRI)- The scandal surrounding a Massachusetts drug lab has claimed another high ranking member of the Governor's administration.

The Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner, John Auerbach, has resigned following the discovery of new information.

Auerbach is the third person out of a job in connection with the Jamaica Plain drug lab scandal.

The scandal started when chemist Annie Dookhan mishandled evidence and reportedly changed results, leaving 34,000 criminal drug cases at risk.

The problem came to light in June 2011. Auerbach was made aware of it in December and waited six weeks to tell his boss, Health and Human Services Secretary JudyAnn Bigby. 

Bigby notified the Governor and State Police immediately, but says the problem was that Auerbach and his staff didn't properly investigate to determine if the misconduct went on for more than one day.

Bigby says she has no plans to resign.

The state is not investigating 34,000 criminal drug cases that may have been tainted.
