FALL RIVER, MASS. (WPRI)- Mosquitoes collected in Fall River have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

The mosquitoes were collected in the area near the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Bristol County Mosquito Control will be spraying the area around the cemetery on August 24 between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Sprayings will also be done in the area around Kennedy Park at the same date and time.

"As a precaution, all residents who live in the area should keep their windows closed and refrain from going outside between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. In addition, caregivers should ensure that children, elderly, relatives and friends follow these guidelines", Fall River Mayor William Flanagan said.

Residents can also help protect themselves and their loved ones by taking a few simple precautions:

  • Be aware of peak mosquito hours. The hours from dusk until dawn are peak biting times.
  • Clothing can help reduce mosquito bites.
  • Apply insect repellant when you go outdoors. Use a repellant with DEET, permethrin, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Install or repair screens in your home.
  • Drain standing water.
