BOSTON, Mass. (WPRI) -- Health officials in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts are seeking to keep local residents safe from potentially deadly illnesses.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Pubic Health, spraying has been completed in 21 communities, including Rehoboth, Taunton, Norton, Raynham, and Easton.
Officials made the decision to spray following the discovery of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in several Massachusetts communities in the past few weeks.
"I am happy to announce that aerial spraying has been successfully completed in these 21 communities," said DPH Commissioner John Auerbach in a statement. "While spraying reduces the risk of mosquito-borne illness, it does not eliminate it and people should continue to protect themselves from mosquito bites."
Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian announced plans to begin mosquito-prevention work in his city this week. Crews are set to place mosquito repellent pellets in catch basins across the city.
Despite the precautions being taken, officials still strongly urge residents to be vigilant in protecting against mosquito bites, including using insect repellant, covering exposed skin and reducing outdoor activity between the hours of dusk and dawn.
