BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts higher education officials plan to change the way the state's public colleges and universities measure and report student achievement in an effort to make the system more relevant to the economy.

The plan discussed Tuesday the Board of Higher Education's meeting in Brockton is expected to be approved this spring.

The Boston Globe reports that under the proposal, called the Vision Project, colleges and universities would report data each year that measures, among other things, the types of degrees being earned to make sure enough nurses, teachers, scientists, and engineers are being trained. The plan would also measure how students perform on graduate school entrance exams.

The data would be used to identify colleges that are doing a good job, so other schools can duplicate their methods.
