NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A local police chief convicted of stealing money from a stripper has settled a lawsuit out-of-court with her.

A Superior Court judge found North Providence Police Chief John Whiting guilty last month of stealing $714 from the purse of stripper Justina Cardoso.

Whiting had chased her in the hours after Tropical Storm Irene last August and when he stopped her car, he took the money from her purse.  He'll be sentenced on September 14th.

Cardoso had also filed a federal suit against Whiting claiming that he'd violated her rights, and she was seeking unspecified damages.  Court documents obtained by Eyewitness News confirm that Cardoso's claims were dismissed July 9th and that no fees would be levied by the court.

There's no word on the exact terms of the out-of-court settlement.
