JOHNSON, R.I. (AP) -- Johnson's central landfill has attracted some uninvited guests.
The Providence Journal reports that a herd of 35 cattle has been ranging the landfill for more than four months.
The cows and bulls have found shade and tranquility in forests along the edges of the landfill. And they've occasionally eaten the landfill's grassy heights, lending a pastoral scene at one of the biggest trash piles on the East Coast.
More than once, the landfill's operator has told the herd's owner, Stanley Luchka, that the cattle need to return to the family's farm just beyond the state property's northern boundary.
Luchka says he, too, wants to recapture the herd. But he says his cattle, including a few bulls weighing as much as 1,600 pounds each, would rather just stay put.
