WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - The Woonsocket Police Department is actively searching for new officers.

The force officially kicked off a recruitment drive on Thursday.

The city is planning to hire ten new officers when the new fiscal year begins in July.

Chief Thomas Carey is hoping to improve ethnic diversity within the department.

According to the Providence Journal, of the 91 officers on the force in Woonsocket, only three are African-American, one Latino, and one Filipino.  There are also only four women.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and have a high school diploma or GED.
