Landmark lays off 22 more workers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Landmark Medical Center has laid off 22 employees in response to a decline in the number of patients.

The Providence Journal reports that spokesman Bill Fischer said the number of patients has declined steadily in recent weeks. He would not say how many fewer patients are being treated at Landmark.

Fischer said the court-appointed special master who is running the hospital acted to preserve the long-term operations of the hospital.

The hospital laid off 31 people on Oct. 30. Landmark employs about 1,100 workers.

Christopher Callaci, general counsel for United Nurses and Allied Professionals, said both rounds of layoffs violated the union's contract and the union has filed a grievance.

A Superior Court judge has approved Landmark's agreement to be acquired by Prime Healthcare Services of California. It requires state approval.
