WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - A Woonsocket school is in danger of being shut down for good just weeks before the start of the school year.

On Wednesday, both the Woonsocket Budget Commission and School Committee were both holding public meetings to discuss the proposed closure of the Fifth Avenue School.

According to The Woonsocket Call, the school has multiple fire code violations that have gone unresolved for years.  Now the Budget Commission is considering closing the school because of the city's dire financial picture.

The Budget Commission was scheduled to discuss the possible closure of the Fifth Avenue School during a meeting on the 2012-2013 budget.  Later, the School Committee was scheduled to vote on whether to close the school.  The Budget Commission will then review the School Committee's vote before making a final decision.
