Stubborn Pawt. fire deemed suspicious

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) -- An overnight fire broke out in a Pawtucket home, just hours after firefighters had left the scene.

The second fire started at about 3:30 a.m. Friday on North Bend Street.

The fire marshal said a police officer stationed near the house noticed smoke and fire coming from the property and alerted the fire department.

The flames had apparently reignited from a late afternoon fire on Thursday that caused severe damage to the vacant house.

The home had already sustained serious damage to the interior and exterior from yet another fire six months ago.

"There's holes, the floors have been compromised on the second floor, so we had to be very cautious on our interior attack," said Pawtucket Fire Chief William Sisson.

The fire chief says this new fire is under investigation, but they do believe it is suspicious.

"This is the second time that this has happened here, and it's young kids, hanging out, and what they don't realize is that it's not a joke, and people could die," said neighbor Cynthia Oliveira. "We came close to getting pretty torched today."

No injuries were reported on the scene, and crews had the fire extinguished by 5 a.m.
