Drivers need to use scrapers, caution

LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) -- Untreated roads and sidewalks still ice covered could cause some problems for drivers during the Tuesday morning commute.

Temperatures will slowly warm above freezing through the morning, says Eyewitness News Meteorologist Michelle Muscatello.

Despite the slippery conditions, all school districts across Rhode Island except for one opened on time.

"I got up this morning everything was icy. I was looking for my scraper and obviously I couldn't find it so I had to use my brush to scrape my car," one driver told Eyewitness News.

The weather surprised some of the shoppers grabbing last-minute groceries Monday night.

"It hurts, thank God I have my hat on," said Steve Dolbeare of Woonsocket.

The sleet was just the latest in a winter storm that slowed the Monday evening commute and left roads slippery.

"It's a little slippery," Dolbeare said, "I have a four-wheel vehicle, which thank God I have. Just taking it slow."

Earlier in the day, Rhode Island Department of Transportation crews were preparing for this storm.

Officials are urging drivers to take things slow, and that's exactly what Dan Adamski says he did.

"Came down pretty hard today for a while, but if you live in new England you're used  to this." Adamski said. "Drive slowly, carefully, that's all you have to do."

In Cumberland, a thin mist fell most of the night.   That also caused some icy conditions.

Not many people were out there, and people like Cindy Arce were happy to already be home from work.

"I think as long as you take it slow and drive cautiously, I think the roads are okay," Arce said.
