CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - A Central Falls city councilman who won last month's special mayoral primary handily has picked up two more endorsements ahead of next week's general election.
James Diossa announced he has the backing of U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien.
He had already been endorsed by several other big-name Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, U.S. Congressman David Cicilline and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.
Diossa will square off against former Central Falls Police Chief Joe Moran in balloting next Tuesday.
Diossa says he will bring a "new future" to Central Falls, which recently emerged from municipal bankruptcy.
Moran, who served as chief for seven years, says he is the only candidate with the managerial experience to run the city.
