PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A student with a criminal record and whose father is a University of Rhode Island official has left a dorm after a brief residency and pulled an application for a tuition waiver.

The Providence Journal reports that Malcolm Jones, who admitted to a 2012 armed robbery, lived in a dorm from Jan. 29 to Feb. 2. His father is Carnell Jones Jr., director of enrollment services.

The university is investigating how he enrolled and got a room without answering a routine question about convictions.

A spokeswoman says the school was not aware of Jones' criminal record. School officials say they found no evidence that Jones had a role in helping his son.

Carnell Jones said the waiver application was withdrawn and regrets that the incident has become a distraction.
