RI to fix damaged Block Island roads

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island is getting to work on repairs to two Block Island roads badly damaged by Superstorm Sandy.
   
Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) says Friday that the $3.1 million project is scheduled to begin Saturday.

It will involve repairs to 1,800-feet of Corn Neck Road between Old Harbor and Beach Road, and work to fix damage on Spring Street south of Old Harbor.
   
Transportation officials say high surf from Sandy undermined the roads.
   
The federal government will pick up some of the cost of the work.
   
Repairs are already under way in Narragansett, where Sandy punched through the seawall on Ocean Road. Work to fix damage on roads in Newport, Bristol and Jamestown is scheduled to being within the next two weeks.
   
The state hopes to wrap up the repairs early next year.
