PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Two local relief organizations are benefiting from a $1.3 million donation by AARP to help the communities hit hardest by Superstorm Sandy.

The Salvation Army and Serve Rhode Island will each be awarded $5,000 to help cover the cost of emergency relief activities in Rhode Island.

Donations from the AARP Foundation Relief Fund are also going to groups in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, as well as the American Red Cross.

AARP is pledging to match any donations to its relief fund, dollar-for-dollar, up to $750,000.
