HOPKINTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- A massive, exotic antelope has escaped and is now loose somewhere in the Hope Valley area.

Environmental officials tell us the 500-pound Nilgai escaped from a private collection in the Woodville-Alton Road section of Hopkinton, near the Black Farm State Management area. We're told it was being prepped for relocation to Texas when it got loose.

The animal resembles a large deer, does not have any antlers, and is predominantly brown in color. It also has a metal tag in one of its ears.

If any hunters mistakenly harvest the creature it should be immediately reported to the DEM, and it should not be consumed. A veterinarian administered medication to the animal prior to its escape, which could cause harm or death to a human if eaten.

Anyone who sees the antelope should contact the DEM's Law Enforcement Division at 222-3070.
