Firefighters battle early morning fire

All occupants got out thanks to smoke detectors

WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) – Firefighters responded to a house fire on Pearl Street in Westerly early Wednesday morning.

Westerly Fire Chief John Mackay tells Eyewitness News the fire broke out shortly after 5 a.m.

Once on the scene firefighters found smoke coming from a basement apartment inside the home.

The multi-family home includes three apartments.

All occupants were able to get out safely.

Chief Mackay says all smoke detectors inside the home were working properly at the time.

The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
