Warwick schools improving security

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - Elementary schools in Rhode Island's second largest city have already taken action to improve security following Friday's massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

Warwick's superintendent has ordered all doors locked at all city elementary schools.

On the door to Oakland Beach Elementary School Monday, there was a paper note which read, "Doors locked, please knock."

Parents like Sandy Plouffe and Joe Almonte were in favor of the change.

"I want to know that my children are safe, that my child is going to come home at the end of the day," Plouffe said.

"I think that's a good idea, you want to have the building secure," Almonte said.

Doorbells will also be placed at the main doors of city elementary schools, until permanent buzzers and cameras can be installed.

The school department notified parents of the security changes through an e-mail and reverse phone call.

The e-mail also indicated officials are examining ways to tighten security at all city schools.
