WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) -- Warwick's mayor is asking the City Council to forgive about $2 million of back taxes owed on the Rocky Point property that the state is trying to buy.

Mayor Scott Avedisian tells The Providence Journal that it's unlikely that the city would ever recoup the full amount.

On Monday, the Department of Environmental Management announced that it's entered into a $9.65 million purchase and sales agreement to buy the remaining 82 acres.

The deal still has to be approved in U.S. District Court.
