WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - Survivors and relatives of the victims of The Station nightclub fire marked the eighth anniversary of the tragedy Sunday.
Eight years ago Sunday, pyrotechnics started a massive blaze at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, killing 100 people and injuring more than 200.
"It's eight years, and it makes this nightmare eight years long. We are trying our best to make something of this site, to make a memorial so people will learn that this can't happen again," said Dave Kane, whose son was the youngest victim to die in the fire.
The anniversary comes as survivors and victims' families say the owner of the site of the fire has reneged on a promise to donate the land for a long-planned memorial.
However, the property owner disagrees that promise was made.
"Although this land has no real market value, it is priceless to the families and the survivors, who have waited so long for the Station Nightclub Memorial Park...this has to be a memorial, just even to show people that this can't happen again," said Chris Fontaine, who's the President of the Station Fire Memorial Foundation.
Sunday's memorial service included a reading of the names of the 100 people killed in the fire.
Families also added special touches to individual memorials and released balloons into the air to commemorate their loved ones.
Fontaine told Eyewitness News that representatives will appear before the West Warwick Town Council next month to request the town take the land by eminent domain.
She said such action is necessary if an agreement with the property owner can't be reached.
Calls were made to speak with the land owners, however, no one returned our calls.
