Third case of meningitis detected in RI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A local man has been diagnosed as the third Rhode Island case in a nationwide meningitis outbreak.

The Department of Health tells us that the Warwick man in his fifties received a spinal injection from Ocean State Pain Management on Sept. 22. The injection came from one of three lots recalled by a Massachusetts pharmacy, which were recalled due to contamination.

Officials tell us 266 patients in Rhode Island received the medication, and they've all been notified of the potential illness.

The Warwick man is currently being treated at an area hospital.

The form of fungal meningitis connected to the outbreak cannot be transmitted from person to person. Anyone that received an epidural steroid injection and is beginning to experience symptoms is asked to contact their health care provider.
