Five Guardsmen honored for heroics

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) -- Five National Guardsmen will be honored Saturday afternoon for their service in Afghanistan.

The members of F Company, 1/126th Aviation will be awarded the Army Commendation Medal with "v" for valor in a 1 p. m. ceremony at Quonset Point.

According to a release distributed by the National Guard, the five Guardsmen were part of a Medevac crew that recovered and evacuated five Italian soldiers during a battle in Afghanistan.

F Company 1/126th was deployed to Afghanistan in January 2011 for a year-long deployment.
