CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Police and the Rhode Island DCYF are investigating how a 1 1/2 year old child was left abandoned inside a Cranston store.

Police were called to the Garfield Avenue Dollar Tree Wednesday after store employees noticed the child in a baby stroller, alone at the end of an aisle.   They were unable to find a parent or guardian in the store.

"I think it's crazy, I mean you have the stroller," said customer Toni Bagley, "It's not even like the child walked away by itself.  You literally have it in a stroller."

Police say the child appeared lethargic, and was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital to be checked out.

About 30 minutes after being called to the store, police say a woman arrived at Cranston Police Headquarters to report her child missing.  Police were able to identify her as the mother of the abandoned child.

Police say they expect to have more information about the investigation Thursday morning.
