CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- Officials are looking into what may have sparked a massive fire in Cranston Friday night.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at the intersection of Park and Elmwood Avenues just before 9:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived, flames and thick smoke were already billowing up from the roof.

Gusty winds made the fire difficult to put out. The Providence Journal reports one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. Authorities tell Eyewitness News no one else was hurt in the blaze.

Firefighters remained on scene through Saturday afternoon putting out hotspots that were still smoldering inside.

Officials tell Eyewitness news that it appears the fire began in the back of the building.

The building has been condemned at plans are in the works to demolish it.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
