Rebuilt Coventry bridge gets new name

COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) -- A Coventry bridge that recently reopened after being destroyed by the historic floods of 2010 was rededicated Monday in honor of a local Revolutionary War hero.

The span that carries Laurel Avenue over the Pawtuxet River will now be known as the Major-General Nathanael Greene Bridge. 

Governor Lincoln Chafee and U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse were in attendance for Monday's rededication ceremony. Also in attendance were members of the Rhode Island Historic Militia, who planned to mark the occasion with musket fire.

The Laurel Avenue Bridge had to be reconstructed after sustaining severe damage in the historic floods of 2010.  It reopened to traffic last month. According to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, the reopening took place three weeks ahead of schedule.
